Book Review: The Selection (A Novel) by Kiera Cass

  • Title: The Selection (a novel) By: Kiera Cass
  • Year: 2012. Haper Teen (hardcover)
Where I discovered this book:

I had heard about this book in many places. I follow several girls who write book reviews at their blogs. I also watch youtube channels with book reviews. I can’t remember all the people who suggested this book, but I remember hearing and seeing about it often. I do recall that one of my local radio stations had made an announcement last fall that there was going to be a pilot for a television series for this book.  They gave a brief overview of the book and I figured I’d like it, so, I pre-ordered it before Christmastime with the hopes of reading it over my Christmas vacation in 2012. However, I regret to say that I had read other books and missed out on this awesome book.

What I liked about this book:
I love that this book is set in the future. I love future/ dystopian societies. This one takes place in a country called “Illea,” which is located in North America after the fall of the United States and World War IV.

The captivating story:
The main character is a teenager named America. She is in a lower caste system in the country. She is in love with a boy who is of a lower caste named Aspen. Aspen breaks it off with her because he feels like he can’t give her the life of pleasures because he is of a lower caste. He tells her to enter “The Selection,” The young prince Maxon is about to get married. However, he does not have much access to getting to know girls because he lives in a castle and he works a lot. There is a contest, which one girl from each of the 35 providences is selected to go to the castle for Prince Maxon to select one girl who’ll become his wife and princess of the nation and future Queen of the country. Of course America enters the contest and she wins. She has mixed feelings between her first love for Aspen who had broken things off with her and new, small kindling feelings for Prince Maxon. What is this girl to do? Find out by reading this book.

Who else might like this book?
People who enjoyed the Hunger Games books and movie might also enjoy this book because it is set in a future dystopian society.
The Selection takes place in a new formed post-apocalyptic North America country called “Illea,” as the Hunger Games takes place in a new formed post-apocalyptic North American country called, “Panem”
The main character in The Selection, “America” is a female much like “Katniss” in the Hunger Games.

Part 2 is already out. I already have a copy of part 2 and will start reading it tonight. Part 2, The Elite, is ranked #311 in books today at Amazon. I can't wait to read it.
