Breaking the chain - education for children living in poverty.
She is 16-years-old and she is involved in three of my favorite things:
a.) promoting literacy for children,
b.) Vlunteering/ doing good things in the world, and
c.) Writing.
Riley started a non-profit organization when she was 14-years-old. It is called “Breaking the chain.” This organization helps to provide education to children who are poor.
Plus, she has already written two novels. Can you believe that? If a teenager can write two books then what is stopping you from going for your goals?

Save Aaron
I hate to hear about this case and I have empathy for Aaron. I don't agree with killing. I do wish there was more done to protect Aaron. But there are many more children who are being abused today.
Aaron had been abused for years. The abuser had been stalking him and recently asked to babysit. watch the videos for more information:
Here are two links about Aaron:

This club is doing good deeds in the world. They’re going to go on a trip to Dakar, Senegal to run an activity centers for ill children. I, Danny Pettry, am really inspired by clubs and organizations like this. It sounds very excited. I’m always pleased to see opportunities be provided for children with illnesses or less opportunities.
Fatou asked me if I was aware of any recreational therapists around the New Jersey/ New York area who may be willing to train members of the club or even accompany them on the trip.

Lois Loehr Rini's book "The Beag: Doing Good in the 'Hood."
Danny’s Book Recommendation:
Lois Loehr Rini’s children’s book, “The Beag: Doing Good in the ‘Hood” could be an excellent way to teach children the importance of developing character. The Beagle in the story does many nice things like brining the newspaper to people and visiting children at the homeless shelter.
Recreational therapists and others who work with children could use this book to teach values. Think the story could prompt some good discussions. Read this story to a child or a group of children and ask them: what did the Beag do? What did you like best about the Beag? How could you act like the Beag? Is there anything nice you could do before the end of the day? Have the child write on a sheet of paper what she (or he) plans to do before the end of the day. Here are some examples: help take out the trash, help wash dishes, help a sibling or do something else that is nice, like the Beag.
Glad to say that my little cousin Maddy got a copy of this book at the Ohio River Book Fair in Huntington, West Virginia with her own money.
Lois is from Indiana. I was pleased to tell her that I completed my graduate degree in Recreational Therapy at Indiana University.

Help Children with Amputations in Haiti
Recieved an email my good friend, Kim Grandal today about ways to help children with amuputations in Hati. This project makes me smile. Kim is a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist and the creative operator of Re-Creative Resources Site Online.
Here is what her email said:
Subject: Put a Little Love in Your Heart" for Haiti
NCCAP's very own Executive Director, Cindy Bradshaw, and her Executive Assistant, Kelly Bradshaw, will be flying to Haiti in July to help with the hundreds of children with amputations and other relief efforts. The trip will cost them each well over $1,000.00 for flight, ground transportation and supplies. Both ladies are volunteering through the Hands of Flight in Action organization .
NCCAP's Facebook Family would like to invite every Activity Professional and their facility to help join this cause! Through the month of May 2010, we would be delighted and would appreciate it very much if your facility would host a fundraiser to help with the cost of their trip/expenses. We are calling this fundraiser "Put a Little Love in Your Heart" for Haiti. As you know National Nursing Home Week is also in May and this is an excellent cause you could include during your fantastic week and what a better way for your resident's to feel part of something huge and for them to know that they helped to make a difference! You can submit your "Put A Little Love" event photos to us and we will post. And the facility that raises the most money and has it turned in by June 7th we receive an engraved award to display in their facility!!
Please also remember that they are also collecting flip flops of all sizes for the Haitians.
Once your fundraiser is complete
you may send a certified check or money order made out to Cindy Bradshaw
and in the "memo" line write "Haiti"
Address:
Cindy Bradshaw
c/o NCCAP 317
Office Square Lane Suite 202A
Virginia Beach, Va 23462
Any donations that are left after expenses will be given to the Hands of Flight in Action to be able to support their efforts for the Haitians.
If your facility doesn't want to support "Put A Little Love in Your Heart" for Haiti they may make a donation directly to them if they wish. The organization is also soliciting donations of any and all prosthetics to use for the parts to make new parts for the kids in Haiti If you would like more information on the Hands of Flight in Action please visit them at: http://www.facebook.com/l/bf11a;www.handsoflightinaction.org

Charity
Here is the Monday Journal Question:
Favorite Charity? Please post your favorite charity. Want to form a partnership with a good charity for proceeds from my new book. First charity didn’t work out. So – tell me who or what group is nice. Thanks, Danny.
Here are what my facebook friends have said so far:
Chantelle Clyburn Harrah
I am all about St Judes. I could go on for hours about why, but in my eyes that's just one charity that is really taking 100% of what you give, and giving 100% of themselves in return.
Jennifer DavisWalton
St. Jude's is Great, also partial to Alzheimer's Association & Diabetes Association. Good luck! Great idea!
Tara Rickard
Nuru International....they do sustainable development in the developing world....amazing work with amazing results....and started by a fellow west virginian....www.nuruinternational.org
Alisa Rae Wartella

Jessica Henry
i agree st. jude's is wonderful. also becuase im a animal lover i love the aspca.
Kiley Kelly
Yea I was gonna go with aspca or humane society
Amy Myers Hard
Heifer International is great -they give livestock and education to people worldwide who live in poverty, so that they can break the cycle. I always had my students doing a read-a-thon during March to support HI. I worked for the Arthritis Foundation in Arizona, and they're pretty awesome as well. Arthritis isn't as "popular" a disease as say cancer, but it affects a huge number of people.....my mom being one of them. There's my two-cents' worth! :-)
Kari Kensinger
why not give to hospital that employs a rec therapist
Amanda Spaulding
It's not in WV but Special Kids of Tennessee (in Murfreesboro). They're a non-proffit. They provide occupational, physical, speech and I believe some recreational therapy for special needs children. I used to volunteer there and love them! They're an amazing group of people! :o) they have a facebook page if you want to check them out.
Nancy Morrison
I second Special Kids! Phillip's brother went there when he was alive. They do amazing things for the kids and rely on donations.
Amber Suttle Willson
St Jude's is amazing. As is March of Dimes. I'm partial to anything that helps children.
Jessica Smith
Victory juction gang camp is a camp for children with disabilities and/or illness(and their families) that offers a week or weekend specific to their needs. Amazing place, I volunteer there at least once a year and have been doing it for 5 years now!

World Peace and Doomsday Valt.
Some people think I’m naive to believe in the words of Anne Frank,
“Despite everything, I believe people are really good at heart” and “how wonderful it is that nobody needs to wait a single second before starting to improve the world.”
Use these two quotes for my own life mission statement.
Read online about some people doing something to improve the world. Norway has created a doomsday vault. It is a collection of seeds in case doomsday occurs.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100311/ap_on_re_eu/eu_norway_doomsday_vault
Hope we’ll never have to use it, but like life insurance, it feels good to know it is there just in case.
Hope that we the citizens of Earth don't destroy own own plant. Watched the movie Avatar. It was based in the future when all the resources on Earth had been depleted. It doesn't show Earth much in this sci-fi movie, but belive Earth is no longer green. That would be a sad day.
Glad to report that while working with my co-worker the dietician, I helped the children at our residential treatment facility to plant beans. She is teaching the children about healthy living. I'm going to use this project as horticulture therapy as a metaphor to help the children to compare their own personal growth to the their plants.
Be sure to plant something this spring. Make it a food crop so it will produce one day!

Be a Super Hero!
Jimmy (my brother) and I have always loved super heroes as far back as I can remember.
We each had our favorites. We’d run around the backyard and the house with our favorite toy character. Mine was batman, this was before the (1989) Michael Keaton (Batman) and Jack Nicholson (Joker) movie was released. My brother’s favorite was Spiderman.
Watched a preview for a new Super Hero movie called “kick ass.” Regret it has that title because I provide services for children and wouldn’t take the children to see that movie with the language in it.
Here are a few lines from the preview:
How come nobody’s ever tried to become a super hero?
Well, I don’t know probably because it’s impossible.
Putting on a mask and helping people, how is that impossible?
Of course, I imagine it is illegal to wear a mask, but anyone can help others.
Saw a sign along the interstate somewhere that said “be a hero” and donate blood or donate to a certain charity or to do something. Can’t remember what it was advertising for, but I do know it was for “doing-good.”
Doing good is important to me (an idealist/ healer). I’m aware that not everyone has the same type of beliefs as the idealist/ healers do. Suppose it is my own Pygmalion project to encourage other people to become more altruistic and idealist. Imagine rationales can’t stand people like me, but not certain.
Who are real life super heroes today?
In the past, we’ve had Mother Teresa and Martin Luther King, Jr.
Suppose the Tibetan monk, the Dalai Lama may be our real life hero today.
He may be the only person alive today who fulfills that type of role.
Decided I am going to be a Super Hero. Now I need a name. Super Danny?
Hah, reminds me of an art project a boy created in one of my expressive art groups. He drew himself as a comic. He had written a nickname that used part of his name after the word “Super.” I asked, why didn’t you use your real name? of course he said, “because I didn’t want to give away my real identify.”
Think it is best go do good deeds without attaching name to it. Putting a name on a good deed seems to be doing it for ulterior motives.
Anne Frank said, “How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.” She is one of my personal heroes. She inspires me to go out and do good things.
Would like to invite you to do something good for someone else today.
And here is a youtube link for the preview to the movie, Kick ass, which, I’ll be going to see.

How I Applied Rubin's Happiness Project!
I kept an empty shelf -- just like Rubin. Please note that I put about 500 books in three large grey rubber storage containers, too. They're put in the closet. Only books I need for my business and quick reference are kept in my office.
Lessons I Applied from Rubin’s Happiness project:
- Rubin is a big time reader. I admire that in her. My goal is to read more books this year. Naturally, I share the same passion as you already know if you’ve read “Discover Hidden Secret Wisdom.” My philosophy is that wisdom is hidden in books and people can discover secrets by reading. Naturally, I plan to read more books this year than I did last year. My mother was the champion in the family. She had read 67-books in 2009. I had read 59. Mother did read the book that I had written among those 67-books. Unfortunately, my father, sister, and brother don’t share the same reading habit. Dad read half of my book in 2009. His plan is to read the second half in 2010. He said I’d write my next book before he finishes it.
- Had read in Rubin’s book about de-cluttering. January was my month to de-clutter. Started in February. I even left an empty shelf just like Rubin had (except mine is on my book shelf. Will eventually put some books on shelf. Had filled three large trash bags full of good clothes, shoes, and even my old high school book-bag which was in excellent condition. Had taken all of these to the local good-will to help people in need. As a reminder. My book, “Discover Hidden Secret Wisdom,” has a chapter on “doing-good.” As a reminder, I recommend doing a spring cleaning and donating to people in need. You could do the same. Clean out and give thing away that you no longer use. What good is it going to do sitting at your house?
- Also, decided to buy myself a little something nice. This was one of the things Rubin suggested, too. She had purchased herself things related to blue birds. So, I splurged and bought a new computer desk and a chair. Big difference, I know. It took me about 3.5 hours to assemble, but did it myself and feel proud. My office space looks a lot nicer with a real desk. The chair gets an A+ for comfort. I feel so happy with my new home office space! This is amazing.
- Sent out Valentine Day cards. Rubin said she sent cards out in February opposed to during Christmas-season because she had more time and money. I picked up a pack of cards and sent them to:
- Donna, a woman who I’d love to date, but she lives two states away from me and she has shown no romantic interest.
- Bryony Matthewman – a woman who I watch on YouTube. She’s an artist and she makes comedy videos. She lives in England. She’s a person who I admire. She says she’s going to create a review for my book, “Discover Hidden Secret Wisdom,” sometime. I won’t hold my breath. (Laugh aloud).
- Zlata Filipović – author of Zlata’s Diary. Her book has had a strong impact on my life. I’m a big fan of hers. She lives in Ireland. Had sent her a copy of my book last month.
- Gage – my nephew. He was the primary reason I picked up the V-Day cards. He’ll turn 3-years-old this month. Put a little bit of money in the card so his parents can get him a fun toy.
- And of course, my mother of course because she is wonderful and I thought she’d enjoy getting a Valentine’s Day card in the mail.
- My sister because she is wonderful, too. Wanted to let her know that I was thinking about her.
- Had one extra card from this pack of 8-cards, so, I opened my address book, flipped the pages and it landed on my friend Chris, so, I sent one to him and his wife Julie. They won’t know what to think when they get a happy Valentine’s Day card from me. (Laugh aloud). Thought it would be a nice way to let ‘em know I care about my friends who live far away.

Teen Collected 800+ Books for Children in Need!
Read at my friend, Kym Moore's site about Margot, a teenager, who had collected over 800 books for children in need.
As a reminder, I think the best kept secrets are hidden in books. You can discover amazing wisdom in books - if you read them. Part of the profits/ proceeds from my book had went to the non-profit charity, First Book, which provides books for children in need. It is more than the book. It was about the mission to promote literacy and avid reading. Many children in the world do not live in homes that have access to age-appropriate books. First Book seeks to provide books to these children.

Protect and Educate Children: Lovely Bones Movie Review
Went to see the Lovely Bones movie with mother, sister, and her boyfriend last Saturday.
Movie was very depressing. It’s about a girl who was murdered and she’s stuck in the “in-between.” Did find the images of heaven and the in-between area to be beautiful. Had read the Lovely Bones novel by Alice Seabold several years ago so was prepared to see a depressed movie.
Here’s a youtube trailer for the movie. It shows some of the pretty images of the “in-between area.”
Why This Movie Upset Me personally:
Felt upset because this fiction story is so much like the truth.
Have provided recreational therapy services for children between the ages of 7 and 13 at a residential treatment facility in one of the two Virginias. All of the children on this unit have been abused either physical, emotional, and/ or sadly sometimes, sexual, too. Working with this population for nearly a decade has had a strong impact on my life. People hear about stories of abuse that make the news every so often. I hear of these stories every day because I provide services for children who've experienced it.
Believe we, as a society, need to do more to protect children from predators.
- Education is one concept to protect children.
- Strong sentences are a second concept.
Here are some of my ideas on protecting children with: EDUCATION.
- # 1. Teach children assertiveness skills. Have children learn to say “no” and mean it. Many children are under the false impression that they must follow rules and do as adults say. Teach children differently. Here is an example on why teaching children to follow rules is a poor idea. In 2004, an 18-year-old girl was forced to strip nude at work in a back office by her McDonald’s supervisor. The girl followed directions because she had been taught to do as adults say and to listen to people in authority. The manager had received a bogus call from a stranger pretending to be an officer claming that the young girl had stolen something. The faker on the phone told the manager to have the young girl strip down. Would think a manager would have more common sense. Pleased to say the girl was awarded $5 million in punitive damages and $1.1 million in compensatory damages and expenses. Here is a link to the story: http://abcnews.go.com/2020/story?id=3688563&page=1.
- # 2. Teach children to “Tell, tell, tell.” Many children are afraid to tell because they think that they’ll get in trouble or that they’ll be blamed. Never blame the victim. It’s not the child’s fault. I have teach the children to continue telling until someone belives them. The first person may not beleive the child. Always beleive the child to be on the safe side.
Use an interesting book to help teach children at our hospital how to tell because I want them to know this skill before they’re discharged. The book is called, “No More Secrets for Me." My grandmother Carrie Pettry had given this book to me and my siblings as a kid. It says, “to Danny, Jimmy, and Carrie (that’s me and my two younger siblings). At work, I have the children to role-play saying “no” for simple things to help them build practice and confidence.
Absolutely, every adult should get this book and read it to their children.
You can get this book from Amazon here:
Finally, my personal thoughts on protecting children: STRONGER SENTENCES
Life sentences without parole should be mandatory for child predators, offenders, and rapists.
The biggest problem with protecting children is the legal system because it lets dangerous people out. Of course, the predator will argue, “but I served my time.” Sure they may have, but they’re still not safe to be released even with a probation officer. The Jaycee Dugard case is a prime example. She was abused by Phillip Craig Garrido (a known offender) who had been “let out early from his 50 year sentence.” Had he not been released early Jacyee may not have been kidnapped and abused. This is why stronger sentences are needed. For more information on Jaycee, read this article at Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kidnapping_of_Jaycee_Lee_Dugard
This debate of holding offenders after their time has been served is a major issue. Should they be held longer? In my opinion, “yes, to protect children.” What is to say they wont’ do it again.
The topic is currently in the news. Martin Andrews (at age 13 in 1973) had been kidnapped, raped, then chained in a box and left to die in a field. Fortunately, Andrews was found by a hunter. Today, in 2010, the offender, Richard Ausley is about to be released. What will prevent him from doing the same to another child? I’d more than glad to help Andrews in his advocacy in any way possible.
Horrifying pictures of the box are shown at this CNN article and link:

Holiday donations
Law of Attraction (LOA) works in miraculous ways. It doesn’t always work the way a person wants it to. Thought the $200 would come directly to me. Didn’t work that way. Thought the money would go to help (one) child in need. Didn’t work that way either.
Provide services for adolescents who’ve been in trouble with the law (part-time). Worked with these boys and developed an end-of-the-year charity project to help them to give back to society and to become more empathetic and caring towards others. These boys created signs to collect donations, put the donations in large boxes and then wrapped the boxes. Didn’t share my personal belief in the LOA with these adolescents directly, but to discuss with these boys about a.) visualizing what you want, and b.) having faith that it will happened, and c.) going to work to make it real.
Nearly two-hundred items were collected. Estimate that over $200 worth of goods were collected. All contents were delivered to a local City Mission a few days before Christmas to help people who are homeless. Helped to transport them to the City Mission after the boys had collected all items.
Here is a list of items that were attracted through the LOA.
Only NEW items were accepted. No used goods were given.
- Hygiene products: 1 mouth wash, 9 shampoos, 3 body washes, 1 hair gel, 10 deodorants, 1 body fragrance, 7 tooth pastes, 5 tooth brushes, 14 soaps, 1 hair brush, 1 baby powered, 3 cases for toothbrushes
- Art projects: 4 sketch pads, 1 box of crayons, 1 box of colored pencils, 1 box of markers, 5 pencils, 1 fuzzy art poster, 1 ink pen.
- Miscellaneous items: 1 king size blanket, 3 towels
- Clothing: 12 beanies/ hats, 1 pack of socks (children’s size), 2 pair of jeans (children’s size), 4 seat pants (for children), 6 sweatshirts (children sizes), 1 pair of gloves, 1 ear muffs for kids
- Food: 14 small packs of shortbread cookies, 6 small bags of chips, 4 small packs of fruit snacks, 2 small pack of pretzels, 1 large box with oatmeal bars
- Games and Activities: 2 comic books, 1 word find, 3 small nerf basketballs with hops, 1 yahtzee game, 2 puzzles, 3 pack of playing cards, 1 pack of ten dice, 1 electronic simon game, , 1 basketball trivia card game, 1 football trivia card game, 1 scrabble card game, 1 basketball, 1 pack of ping-pong paddles.

Pink Glove Dance (doing good)
Here is what she said:
Our daughter-in-law, Emily Somers, created, directed and choreographed this in Portland last week for her Medline glove division as a fundraiser for breast cancer awareness. This was all her idea to help promote their new pink gloves. I don't know how she got so many employees, doctors and patients to participate, but it started to really catch on and they all had a lot of fun doing it.
When the video gets 1 million hits, Medline will be making a huge contribution to the hospital, as well as offering free mammograms for the community. Please check it out. It's an easy and great way to donate to a wonderful cause, and who hasn't been touched by breast cancer?

Law of attraction at work again
The breakthrough, underground, DVD, “The Secret,” is based on the “Law of Attraction.” Basically, this law says what you think about your bring about, or “like attracts like.” So, if I think about coffee then naturally, I’ll bring a coffee into my life.
If a person thinks of “The Golden Gate Bridge” before it was every built or designed, then, he’d go on to design it and build it and bring it to life. He’ll attract it into the world.
Thoughts are powerful. Be careful about your thoughts. If you’re thinking in not-so-positive ways then you could easily be attracting not-so-nice things into your life.
Teachers in “The Secret” DVD suggest to try to attract something easy first, like “a cup of coffee.”
I only go to Starbucks about twice a month, at the most. I love the taste of their coffees and teas and I really enjoy the atmosphere there, too. The prices keep me from going as often as I want.
Last month, I stopped by Starbucks, I posted that I had attracted two free cups of coffee.
This month, I returned. The barista asked me if I wanted a receipt. I said, “no.” She laughed and said, “you’re going to get one anyway. You were selected to take a survey to get a free cup of coffee.” I told her “thanks” and that I’d be taking that survey.
So, I’ve attracted another cup of coffee into my life.
Now, I’m going to aim for something a little larger.
I’m a caring person and I want to take care of a child in need for this upcoming holiday season. Naturally, having a little extra money could help make that possible. I’m certain that the child has already used the law of attraction, by creating a wish list. Her (or his) wishes are listed on a little paper-cut-out ornament on a tree at the mall. She’s already started the creative process. I’m here to help. I’m going to go out and get these gifts for her (or him). I’ll randomly select an ornament with a name on it. Naturally, I’ll be attracted to the right ones. I’d like to attract an extra $200 by the end of this week just for this project. I’ll spend all $200 on the child selected. Now, I’m going to sit back and allow the $200 to come my way. I’m not certain how it will show-up or even why. I just don’t know, but I do know that it will show up one way or another. Maybe I’ll get a bonus at work (laugh aloud), or maybe I’ll find a way to earn a quick $200, or maybe I’ll get a random $200 gift in the mail. I have no clue, but I do know that it is on its way because the law of attraction is always at work.
I’m so happy and grateful now that I’m using this $200 to make the life of a child brighter this holiday season.
