Why books help you (or your child) to be successful.

First Book is a charity that provides books to children in need addressing one of the most important aspects that influence literacy: access to age appropriate books.

Part of the proceeds from my best-selling book, “Discover Hidden Secret Wisdom” was donated to First Book.

First Book is on twitter. They post many interesting articles about books and reading.

In my self-improvement book, “Discover Hidden Secret Wisdom,” I argue that reading is the key to succeeding.

First Book posted a link for an interesting article about reading that is based on research.

Now there is scientific proof that books and reading is a key to succeeding.

Here is the basic finding: Having more books in your home can increase the chances of your child’s success in school.

Your goal today is to start getting your home chockfull of books. Make sure they’re age-appropriate for your child. A three-year-old won’t be able to read a Stephen King novel.

Make sure your home has various books. These should include: novels and reference books. I’d also like to suggest that you add my self-improvement book to your personal library. Discover Hidden Secret Wisdom is about becoming your greatest. The main concept of the book is on the importance and benefits of reading. It also includes other tips and techniques for becoming your greatest.

Don't miss out. You can get Discover Hidden Secret Wisdom at Amazon.com. Here is the link:

Books for Children

“Read to succeed and become anything you want” is one of my personal mottos.

It was also the basis for my first self-improvement book, “Discover Hidden Secret Wisdom. Basically, I believe wisdom his hidden in books, but a person must be an avid reader to discover these secrets.

Heard some depressing news today about the closing of a bookstore. My parents take little mini-trips from time-to-time. Today they left their hometown of Beckley, W.Va. to visit the Mercer Mall in Princeton, W.Va. Mother informed me that the bookstore in the mall had closed. That is terribly sad. Feel very upset about this news. How can a mall not have a bookstore?

There is a growing trend in the closing of bookstores in my home state of West Virginia based on my experiences:

The Beckley, W.Va. Crossroads Mall once had two bookstores. Now it only has one.
The Kanawha City, W.Va. Kanawha Mall once had a bookstore, but it has been closed.
The Charleston, W.Va. Town Center Mall once had two bookstores, both of them have been closed, but they now have a Borders-express.
The Barboursville, W.Va. Huntington Mall once had two bookstores: a Waldenbooks and a Borders bookstore. Believe they closed the Waldenbooks when Borders bought at Walden.

Believe West Virginia is a place that needs more access to books. Think people could improve their lives by reading more.

There are still a few positive places that people in the state can get books.
Many people are also ordering books online at places like Amazon.com. Many people are reading electronic books online. People can still get books at places like Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club, however, the selection is limited. These places only carry current best-sellers based on what I’ve seen. Some people download books to electronic devise like the Amazon-Kindle, which I use and enjoy.

The non-profit First Book provides free books to children in need addressing literacy. They say at their web-site that children’s literacy can be improved by providing children with access to age-appropriate books.

Found a wonderful web-site today. It was recommended to me on facebook. Places like facebook send selected ads targeted to people’s interest and demographic. As a booklover, an interesting page was suggested to me today.

It’s called Children’s Book of the Month Club.

One of my 2010 goals is to buy a new book for my nephew Gage (3-years-old) each month of the year.

In January I got him, 5 little monkey’s jumping on a bed.
In February I got him a little Einstein Book.
In March I got him 10 Happy Puppies.

Think I’m going to join the children’s book of the month club. Will have to look at the prices to determine which would be more affordable between them and Amazon.com, which I currently use to get Gage books.

Teen Collected 800+ Books for Children in Need!

This story is amazing. Margot le Baron is an inspiration for me.

Read at my friend, Kym Moore's site about Margot, a teenager, who had collected over 800 books for children in need.

As a reminder, I think the best kept secrets are hidden in books. You can discover amazing wisdom in books - if you read them. Part of the profits/ proceeds from my book had went to the non-profit charity, First Book, which provides books for children in need. It is more than the book. It was about the mission to promote literacy and avid reading. Many children in the world do not live in homes that have access to age-appropriate books. First Book seeks to provide books to these children.

Read to Succeed and Become Great at Anything in Life

The book you don’t read won’t help you,” is a quote that was often said by the late legendary motivational speaker, Jim Rohn, who had recently passed away in December of 2009. Rohn’s quote is a key to personal growth and development. Great wisdom is hidden in books. However, a person must read books to discover their secrets.

Reading and writing are two of my favorite hobbies. Helping people is my life’s passion. Naturally, I felt the desire to write a book on how “reading books” can help a person to become self-fulfilled and successful in life.

Discover Hidden Secret Wisdom: A Recreational Therapist’s System on How You Can Become Great at Anything” is a book that was designed for people who are seeking to find their way in life. Each of the 12 chapters is a prescription towards wellness, success, happiness, and greatness. Readers can find this book to be a captivating approach to self-discovery. Many of the lessons in the book are based on my personal experiences as a recreational therapist for a children’s unit at a psychiatric hospital. I weaved together personal experiences and examples from a wide range of sources from self-help authors to scientific researchers.

Bibliotherapy (the therapeutic use of books) is a technique that I use to help children with aggression problems to become more empathetic. We’ll read children’s stories and have discussions on how each character felt during different parts of the story. We’ll talk about safe and fair solutions that characters in the story could have taken. Learning to read better promotes the child’s self-esteem and social skills based on my personal experiences. I try to promote and encourage these children to become avid readers at a young age.

Discover Hidden Secret Wisdom is more than a book. It is mission to promote reading and literacy. There are a large number of people who’ll never read another book after high school. Many more will never read another book after college. An estimated 13 percent of adults in my home-state of West Virginia didn’t have basic literacy skills in 2003, according to a report from the National Center for Education Statistics.

Decided to form a partnership and donate part of the proceeds from Discover Hidden Secret Wisdom to First Book because of their shared vision and mission to promote reading and literacy. Always glad to hear about the wonderful things that First Book is doing to help provide books for children in need. Believe that avid reading should start during childhood.

Dr. Suess said it best: “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn the more places you’ll go.”

Have you read any good self-improvement books lately?

First Book Promotes Literacy!

First Book helps to provide new books to millions of children who would otherwise have few, if any.

Studies indicate that a child’s future reading success is strongly determined by the number of books in the home. Yet recent data reveals that in low-income neighborhoods, there is a shocking average of only one age-appropriate book for every 300 children. By improving access to books, First Book, helps ensure that all children, regardless of their economic situation, are equipped with the tools they need to succeed.

First Book has distributed more than 65 million books.

I, Danny Pettry, am a partner with First Book. I love what they’re doing to help children in need. My recent self-improvement book, Discover Hidden Secret Wisdom has the mission to encourage reading and literacy.

A portion of all the profits from Discover Hidden Secret Wisdom went to First Book.

I think wisdom for a better life is hidden in books. However, you must be an avid reader to discover these secrets. Mark Twain said, “The person who doesn’t read isn’t any better off than the person who can’t read.” I regret to hear that so many people, who can read, don’t. I think they’re missing a wonderful opportunity for self-improvement.

Here's The #1 Way To Learn Anything

Jack Canfield posted the following quote on his Facebook page today:

“For virtually everything that you want to do there are books and courses on how to do it.”

Jack Canfield is the best-selling co-creator of the Chick Soup Series and he’s the author my all-time favorite self-improvement book: The Success Principles.

Canfield has been a strong influence in my life. I’ve read many of his books, listened to his courses on audio, and have watched him speak on DVDs. He is on my list of must-meet people, too. I’ve enjoyed Canfield in The Aladdin Factor (book and audio), Dare to Dream (book), The Secret (DVD and book), and many, many others.

Canfield is also a West Virginian. He grew up in the small town of Wheeling, West Virginia. As you already know, West Virginia is often behind the rest of the nation in rankings. If a Canfield can become a world-record holder for having the most books on the New York Times Best-selling List and he’s from West Virginia – Then a person from anywhere can get almost anything they want, too.

Canfield made it clear in his quote: “There are books and courses on how to do it.”

I take the same approach to success. In my recent book, “Discover Hidden Secret Wisdom,” I encourage people to become lifelong readers and learners. “Read to succeed and become great at anything” is the common motto in my book. In fact, it isn’t about the book. It is about the mission to promote literacy and reading. Portion of the funds from my book, “Discover Hidden Secret Wisdom: how to become great at anything” is donated to the non-profit, First Book. They provide free books to children in need – addressing one of the biggest factors for literacy: access to age-appropriate books.

Here is my web-page that is dedicated to Jack Canfield:

Therapeutic benefits of stories for children!

“Story Time” always grabs my attention as a headline in a newspaper. As you already know, I’m a strong advocate for reading and literacy. You’d especially know this if you’ve read my best-selling book, Discover Hidden Secret Wisdom, which suggests that a person can become fulfilled in life by reading more books. Even a portion of the profits from this went to the non-profit, First Book. They provide free books to children in need addressing the number one factor facing literacy: access to age-appropriate books.

Laughing, smiling, and attentive children were shown on the front page of the Register-Herald Newspaper (Beckley, West Virginia) on Nov. 21, 2009 with the caption, “story time.”

Puppet show performances were provided for children last Friday at Stratton Elementary (Beckley area). These shows were based on various children’s stories.

I enjoyed the note in the picture caption that read:

“The stories are used to illustrate self-esteem, vanity, greed, tolerance, bullying, and stranger danger.”

It appears that there are several therapeutic values from these stories.

I’m very pleased that these puppet performances are being provided for children in Beckley!

Here are some activity ideas:

a.) Volunteer to read to children
b.) Develop a puppet show for children
c.) Have your kids read books and develop their own puppet show (with use of paper-bag puppets).
d.) Discuss the story with the child. How did that story make you feel? What do you think is the major lesson in the story? What did you learn from the story? How could you use this lesson in your life?
e.) Buy a child a book.
