Gratitude Bugs -- books for children!

G-Bugs “The Gratitude Bugs” is a series of books for children by Jackie Jones.

These books have stories that teach and promote character. They consist of: acceptance, gratefulness, self-esteem, honesty, integrity, responsibility, respect, forgiveness, loyalty, and friendship.

Parents should get these books and read them and re-read them to their children.

I’m going to get all of the books from this series for my nephew Gage who is 3-years-old.

Therapeutic Recreation: Bibliotherapy.

Recreational therapists use a variety of activity interventions to help people get better. I provide services for children at a residential treatment facility. Many of these children have a need to develop positive social interaction skills. I plan to use these books to help the children to increase awareness of qualities of character.

ATRA - New List Serv

I highly recommend that you join the new list serv for recreational therapists by the American Therapeutic Recreation Association with OK University.

There have been constant updates.

I posted my first question today by sending an email to the list serve. I asked for people from N.C., N.H., O.K., or Utah to contact me regarding the process for obtaining state licensure in Rec Therapy. Several recreational therapists in W.Va. are wanting to start this process.

Received emails from two people from two different states who are interested in presenting. This is wonderful news. The list-serv is going to work wonders for recreational therapists in our field.

All you have to do is:

New York Rec Therapy Licensure

Read in the American Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA) winter 2010 newsletter that New York State TR Licensure Bill was introduced to the New York State Senate.

The next step is for the bill to pass and become law.

Think licensure of recreational therapists/ therapeutic recreation specialists is important.

We, recreational therapists work with people with serious mental illnesses, physical limitations, or other illnesses.

A person needs a license to drive a car
A person needs a license to cut hair

Naturally, I’d want a person who provides RT/ TR services to be licensed and certified if they were to ever provide services to anyone in my family.

Hope the licensure processes gets started in my state of West Virginia.

We’re having NCTRC talk at our West Virginia state conference in the fall of 2010.

College students in a Therapeutic Recreation or Recreational Therapy degree program can apply for a student scholarship to attend the American Therapeutic Recreation Association’s 2010 conference. It is called the “Peg Connolly Scholarship,” which is named in honor of the first President of ATRA, Dr. Peg Connolly. This year’s conference will be in Spokane, Washington this year. Applicants must be a student-member of ATRA in order to be considered.

I, Danny Pettry had won one of the 8 Peg Connolly Scholarship awards in 2004 while I was a graduate student in Recreational Therapy. I had an opportunity to go to the conference which was in Kansas City, Missouri that year. It was a wonderful opportunity to meet many recreational therapists across the United States and around the world. I still keep in touch with many of these people today by email.

Realized when I was 19-years-old (in 1999) that I wanted to be a Recreational Therapist.

Have worked as a Recreational thearpist for nearly 8-years now!

During my 2002 summer internship I felt worried about finding a job in the field. Applied at hundreds of hospitals. Got lucky and had an interview on the final day of my internship. The interview was at a different hospital and not the one where I completed my internship. Have been at this same job since then.
